magazine recently interviewed Brad Pitt and as part of the piece he was quoted as saying, “I wasn’t living an interesting life …” Have you ever had moments in your life when you thought those same thoughts?

His comment reminded me of a book I just finished reading called – A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller. And much like other books in my life, this one came highly recommended by a friend. And I am highly recommending it to you.

Miller's book is inspiring, funny, touching and real! Donald learns (though the help of a couple of movie producers who want to make a movie out of his life), that his life is not very interesting. In fact, he discovers that his life is boring. The book outline is creative and fun to follow - set up like a movie. We learn about the Character, we learn about his weaknesses, his dreams and his self-imposed limitations. And then, we get to watch the Character become a hero as he dares to live a more interesting story. He breaks through his own fears and changes his life one day at a time.

One of my favorite stories in Miller’s book is when he decides he is going to hike The Inca Trail in Peru. He was out of shape and committed to hiking it without doing any research so he goes to the Internet for facts … to his dismay he bumps into phrases such as – excruciating pain and stay away. Alas, he goes on the journey and sees his life transforming into something better than it was before. With each adventure he embarks on (asking the girl out, joining the gym, finding his dad, and biking across America), he finds himself living a better life.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years is a beautiful doorway beckoning readers to start living better life stories.

I laughed out loud many times with this book and I also cried ... Miller is a great storyteller and with every word and page of this book - I found myself inspired to live a better life!

Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Religion/Spirituality/General

It's Never Too Late .. 172 simple acts to change your life by Patrick Lindsay

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jpC_FyO1jbg/TdLQOagl91I/AAAAAAAAAK0/ZBLDVsrR0Gg/s320/never_too_late_jpg_408x395_q85.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607773432082462546" />

It’s Never Too Late … 172 simple acts to change your life
by Patrick Lindsay

How I found this book - I was wondering and wandering around Barnes & Noble one night and I spotted the bike on the front cover of this book and was instantly ‘sold’. Now, the book cover has become one of the most important selling components to a book. Over half of booksellers feel the cover design is the most important component.

If you are accepted by a traditional publishing house, they will design a book cover for your book. If you use a POD (print on demand) publisher, you can hire them to design a cover, or you can submit your own design. When you self-publish you either hire a freelance cover designer or design your own.

The average person spends 8 seconds looking at the front cover and 15 seconds on the back. It is a fact, that the front cover of a book is what draws the initial attention from the buyer, if he doesn’t like the cover, he won’t look any closer at the book.

Read the rest of the article here: (READ) My daughter (who is 8) loves reading chapter books and a few days ago, we made a trip to the library to grab more “Judy Moody” books. The place where these particular books are stored happens to be near the self-help books. I love self-help books and often find myself wandering down the aisle checking out the titles.

My fingers were doing the walking (you know the routine – run your fingers along the titles) until you find one that jumps out at you. My hand stopped immediately on the spine of “Emotional Vampires: Dealing with People Who Drain You Dry” by Albert J. Bernstein, Ph.D.

WOW! What a title huh? I simply had to check it out and bring it home!

It’s been a very interesting read and I enjoy the Author’s insights, humor and tips for dealing with and protecting ourselves from the people around us that can suck the joy out of living!

It's a new year - I figure we might as well arm ourselves with tools to combat the tough stuff and people around us! :)

For more information visit: http://www.albernstein.com/id55.htm

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://authorbeginnings.blogspot.com/2011/01/emotional-vampires-by-albert-j.html' title='"Emotional Vampires" by Albert J. I don't want to waste a single thought on negativity. I wrote the book to inspire others to have this same attitude and to Live Inspired.

What is your favorite chapter/quote or page in the book and why?
I just love the quote from Sally Cofer-Lindberg, one of the Inspired Living Cafe community members, "Living inspired is born in the awareness that this is it! We have one chance at life. And the wonderful gift we are given every morning is the choice of how we are going to live that moment, that day." She just sums up Living Inspired so well!

Do you have other books you have written? Plus, I was gifted with two very unique dogs who gave me great inspiration with all of their antics.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
My favorite chapter is chapter three.. In it, Penny is sitting in the flower planter she has dug out and listens in on the meeting of the four animals. Here, she discovers their evil plot. It's my favorite because my real dog, Penny, did dig out a planter and I always imagined what she did while sitting in it, now I know.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
None that are published. The second Penny and Rio book will come out this fall. It will be titiled "Penny and Rio: The Locked Doghouse Mystery". I am also currently working on a mid-grade novel about four girls who solve mysteries.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
I have always written stories, but it was never something I concentrated on. Then a couple of years ago I went through a prolonged illness. It was very difficult. One of the things that helped me get through was writing. When I recovered, I realized that I needed to make writing a priority in my life because that is what I loved, so I dedicated more time to writing and since then have published this book.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
My husband, Jon. He's always been there for me encouraging me and supporting me. When I have times of doubt, like every writer, he's the one to say "Yes, you will be published and yes, they will like your book!" I couldn't do this without him.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published? Don't give up! No matter how many rejections letters you receive, keep at it. You never know who is out there just looking for a book like yours.

Who is your favorite author? I have so many, it's difficult to choose. I suppose my favorite children's author is J.K. Rowling. I remember hitting a low point where all of my stories were being rejected and I thought about giving up. Then I picked up Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It just blew me away. The book transported me to a new place, like all good books should. I thought, I want to write like that! While I'm not sure I'll ever reach that goal, it helped me to pick up the pen and start again.

Do you have an author website? What is it? My website is http://www.pennyandrio.com/
I have great pictures of the real Penny and Rio. Check it out!

What is your favorite quote?
"Do one thing that scares you every day." Eleanor Roosevelt It means to "Be Bold!" and take chances. I think that all writers should do this.

****
Jennifer, thanks for the photo and interview! Best of luck with all your 'dog mysteries' :)
~Wendy

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='J.E. I began to wonder, where is the survivor today? ...and Paranoia was born.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
The book is told through post-traumatic flashbacks. Toward the end, the walls between flashback and reality begin to break down. It allowed me to play with tense, POV, and some other things that made the chapter fun to write and, I think, really interesting to read.

Do you have other books you have written? A friend of mine showed me some things he'd written and, all respect to him, I thought..wow, I can do that, too! That was it. I studied literature in college...and 9/11 inspired me to finally publish.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
In college I belonged to an organization and we were debating over some issues. Every once in a while I woud jump in, but for the most part I was quiet and the debates raged on. Finally, an older member of the organization came over to me and whispered, "John, say something. They trust you and respect what you say. If you speak up, the debate will be over." And it was. From that day on, I gained a new self-confidence.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
There are so many options available today, but make sure you do it the way you want to do it. If you're expecting a book on the bookstore shelves, you may not want to self-publish - persevere in trying to go the traditional route. Either way, it involves hard work, sacrifice, great timing, and even some luck.

Do you have a quote that motivates you?
Always loved, "All men die. Not all men truly live." - Braveheart

10% of all profits from sales of "Paranoia" will be donated to the Twin Towers Orphan Fund (www.ttof.org).

****
Thank you for the interview! His english teacher knew I wrote short stories and said why not write a book. Ryan loves wizards and so I wrote the book.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
Shore of Shallow Water is my favourite chapter because it's an impossible situation the wizards are faced with and they do escape.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
Wizards' Kingdom is a trilogy with WK being the first, The Obelisk of Ashmar book 2 (2006) and Jarraks Darkness book 3 (2007).

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
Yes, I wrote 26 short stories which were put on a publishers website. One story 'Always Just Behind' was featured in an anthology called 'When Darkness Comes,' and the publisher Crystal Serenades set up a booksigning in a haunted castle. When I signed my first book I was hooked.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person? T
hat person without a shadow of doubt is my wife Janice. She has been there and believed in me since the beginning and goes on all my booksignings with me.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published? Write, write, write and never ever, ever give up no matter what. You will be rejected by every publisher under the sun. You will be pushed to the back of bookshops hidden from customers, when higher profiled authors are in the same store. But it will all be worth it.

Who is your favorite author? Kenneth Oppel.

Do you have an author website? I realized I had chosen a different perspective than the norm and thought it could help others living in similar situations to love and live well- live happier with whatever challenges they faced, particularly autism. I was inspired by the parents who read some of my initial writing and told me it had made a tremendous difference for them.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
Moments of Love- It is a celebration of what's truly important with our kids- those tiny moments of love that show up within our days and sometimes in the midst of our struggles. Brings us back to what's beautiful and what's real- sometimes we forget to notice. Moments of Love spotlights the good stuff and reminds us to stop, enjoy and appreciate.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
No, but my second book should be out within the next year.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
Back in 1999,I read an editorial about a professor who believed it was ok to kill infants who are born, as he says "inconveniently disabled" within the first few months of life. He believed it is not morally equivalent to killing a person. I had a very strong (negative) emotional reaction to this and wrote an essay, "The Gift of Kyle" as a response. (Kyle is my son who is severely affected by autism.) With that essay, I found my writing voice. The response from people I shared it with was very positive and powerful.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
Yes, my coauthor Kathy Almeida and my husband, Neil Nobel.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
Go for your dream! Be patient with yourself and the process.

Who is your favorite author?
Jodi Picoult

Do you have an author website? They have published all my books.
Release Date: May of 2008. I'm hoping the next book in the series will be out before the end of this year.
Website: http://www.micheleashmanbell.com/
Blog: http://www.micheleabell.blogspot.com/

What inspired you to write the book/series?
Several things inspired me to write this series and this particular book. After spending many years attending book signings at Ladies Night, Education Week and Women's Conferences, I had enjoyed seeing the beautiful way in which women surround themselves with support, either from family or friends. Many times I would ask one of the women who they were with and they would tell me they were with their sisters, or neighbors, or girlfriends and that certain events were annual events for them. I love seeing this sisterhood and the need women have to have these connections with others. I wanted to write a series about a group of women who had been friends since high school and how they stayed close through the years and still gave love and support to each other. The first book "A Modest Proposal" is about one of the friends and her life in New York City as a clothes designer and her dream of designing clothes that are high fashion and modest. I wrote this book because I spent many hours in dressing rooms with a crying daughter trying to find a dress for prom that was modest and pretty. I figured there were other moms and daughters who would read this story and relate to it. I also wanted to let women know that they can indeed have both!

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
I always like the point in the story where the character has everything working against them and they are beaten down and ready to give, but then, they have that moment, that epiphany, when they realize they can do it. In my book it happens when Lauryn, the main character, has everything working against her, and is deathly ill on top of it, and she thinks that all her hard work has basically gone down the toilet, then she learns some information that helps her realize, she can do it! I love the energy and the excitement and the positiveness of it all. I call these, "Esther" moments. We all have them.

Do you have other books you have written?
I mentioned earlier that I do have quite a few other books. They are; Unexpected Love, Enduring Love, A Forever Love, Yesterdays Love, Love After All, Love Lights the Way, Pathway Home, Written in the Stars, Finding Paradise, Without A Flaw, Timeless Moments, Forget Me Not, Perfect Timing, A Modest Proposal, and my kids series, Latter-day Spies: Spyhunt, Dragon's Jaw and Rescue. Also my Christmas book, "A Candle in the Window" and several other Christmas booklets.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
One of the most profound was when I attended a conference and listened to an editor from the LDS market who talked about how the market was really breaking open and there was a lot of great potential. I had been trying to break into the national market without luck and this was like an "aha!" moment for me. It changed my whole focus and helped me move in the right direction. I really think that I was supposed to be there in that meeting that day to hear her, or I might never have considered the LDS market.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
I'll be honest, I always had love and support from my husband and family, but I really didn't have that one special person who cheered for me and said, "I know you can do this." That had to come from inside of me. I had to dig deep and go to the Lord when I got discouraged or felt defeated. I had wonderful friends in critique groups, but I really had to push it through on my own determination and perseverance.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
To work hard and never give up on their dream. I know many talented authors who will never get published because they don't work as hard. I would also tell them to write constantly and really hone their skill as a writer. I still am learning the tricks of the trade and feel I can always improve.

What is the last book you read? What did you like about it?
The last book I read for pleasure was "Left to Tell" a book by a woman who survived the Rwandan holocaust. The book changed my life. I love reading biographies and stories about people surviving and overcoming great difficulties. This woman wrote her story of watching her family get killed right in front of her eyes, as well as many other loved ones and neighbors and friends and survived for months living in hiding in a bathroom while the holocaust continued, yet she forgave the men who performed these horrible deeds.

Is there a quote that motivates you? If so, please share!
There are two that seem to describe me and what I believe. The first is the well-known quote by Robert Frost, "Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference." The other one is by Oprah Winfrey who said, "Luck is preparation meeting opportunity." I do believe we create our own luck by working hard and being ready when opportunity knocks.

****************
Thank you Michele for the interview! They have always been my heroes, so I was very open to the idea. Serving in Young Women's, I wanted the girls to realize they can be warriors, too. But since there are only four women mentioned in the Book of Mormon I created Sydney Morgan, a modern, sixteen-year-old young woman who has a black belt in karate. Of course, she has to travel back in time to help out the warriors.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
That's a hard question to answer. I loved writing the scenes between Tarik (the hero) and Sydney (the protagonist), but I'd have to say Chapter 20--Two Best Fighters was my favorite. For this chapter I read and reread Helaman's letters to Moroni in the Book of Mormon. The love that man had for those boys framed his words. I only hope I did him justice as I wrote the scene of him trying to rally the stripling warriors to go to battle against a Lamanite army that outnumbered them.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
Yes. The sequel for The Forgotten Warrior is in my publisher's hands. I have a Christmas story due to come out in the fall of 2009 titled, An Angel on Main Street. It's set in the 1950's and the protagonist is Micah Connors, and eleven-year-old boy who has a great fear of death. His father died during the Korean war. His little sister, Annie, is very ill and Micah fears she will die. In the center of town a nativity begins to appear one piece at a time. Annie tells Micah that when the baby Jesus comes, he'll make her well. Micah fears his sister may die before Christmas, so he sets out on a quest to find the nativity maker and borrow the baby Jesus.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
Maybe it was the night when I called an writer to get his advice. He pretty much told me off by saying, who did I think I was trying to write a book? If he thought he'd discouraged me, he was dead wrong. What is that saying... something about a woman scorn...anyway he only made me more determined.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
My husband, Bruce. When I'm discouraged, he lifts me up.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
I remember going to a writers conference in Denver. I was attending in a lecture where the author was talking about how she had sold the first book she'd ever written and had been publishing every since. I knew that lecture was not for me, so I left and in the reception area I found several well-known published authors. They, too, had bailed on the talk and told me the speaker was the exception. They had all received many rejections in their careers and said if you want it badly enough, if you're willing to take the criticism and rejections, and still remain determined to see your dream come true, you'll make it. They were right, so I'm more than happy to pass that advice on to others.

Who is your favorite author?

Francine Rivers

Do you have a quote that motivates you?
I received this saying for Christmas: "If there is ever a tomorrow when we're not together...there is something you must always remember...you are braver than you believe, stronger that you seem, and smarter than you think...but the most important thing is, even if we're apart, I'll always be with you." Signed, Winnie the Pooh (anyway that's what the plaque says).

Personal notes from Wendy:
Kathi, I really appreciated your advice to authors about being willing to keep writing and trying! I agree - If you want something badly enough, you'll find a way to make it happen. Thanks for the interview - good luck with your books.

"Lemon Tart" by Josi Kilpack

Author blogVIEW
with Josi Kilpack

Title: "Lemon Tart"—the first book in my new Sadie Hoffmiller culinary mystery series.
Publisher: Deseret Book
Release Date: January 2009
Website: http://www.josiskilpack.com/

What inspired you to write this book?
I participated in a contest hosted by Jeff Savage about three years ago where he challenged writers to write the first chapter of a mystery novel that involved food. I had never written anything like that and had a lot of fun doing it. Over the next couple years I worked on it here and there and then last spring I approached Deseret Book (who was currently publishing my LDS women’s fiction) with the idea. They liked it, we added the recipes to make it an actual culinary mystery, and here we are now. It’s a very different book than anything I’ve written before but I’m very excited about it.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I think my favorite chapter is probably the one where Sadie breaks into her neighbor’s house and ends up hiding under the bed when another intruder entered. It was tons of fun to write and includes some key clues that made me feel very clever.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
Before Lemon Tart I had written eight LDS novels—seven are LDS women’s fiction; some are romance, others are more suspense. The eighth was a YA novel I wrote back in 2004. My most recent LDS fiction novel was Her Good Name, which was published in September 2008 and is about a woman who has her identity stolen and has to prove who she really is. Most of my LDS fiction is centered around modern day issues—prescription drug addiction, internet predators, infertility etc.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
I don’t think I would be an author if not for bed rest associated with my third pregnancy where I started a short story because I had nothing else to do. I’d always loved to write, but I really flipped the switch with that experience and it eventually became my first book, Earning Eternity. The other thing that helped me is that I’m doggedly determined when I want something. I was too dumb to know how to do things right, so I just kept doing what seemed like a good idea and it’s worked out for me—a long road, to be sure, but ultimately I’m quite happy where I am so there’s not much point in regretting my wandering path, is there? :-)

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?

It would have to be my husband, Lee. He’s always seen more in me than I have (or most people have seen in me, actually) and whenever I face discouragements he’s the one that tells me I can do this. When I started writing it thought it was great, when I let the writing take too much time away from my other responsibilities, he’s the one that pulls me back to reality and when I achieve success, he’s proud and yet not the least bit surprised. Without him I’d have never dared show my work to anyone, let alone work toward publication. He is the greatest gift God has ever given me, and brought every other good thing I have in my life with him.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
To keep at it and learn, learn, learn. Most authors feel ‘inspired’ to write; too many of them assume that inspiration is enough. It isn’t. It’s the starting point, but to truly be successful you need to write your best work which means you have to know what you’re doing. Read writing books (38 most common mistakes in fiction by Jack Bickenham is one of my favorites) and attend writing conferences, classes, or groups. Learn the craft behind telling a story so that you can tell YOURS. There are not many people wiling to work hard and long enough to reach publication, but those that are open to learning, accepting feedback, and making writing a priority in their life can’t be stopped if they set their sights on the goal and continually work toward it.

Who is your favorite author?
Oh yikes, that’s hard. I read rather eclectically, so I have a variety of authors I love—Gerald Lund, Mary Higgins Clark, Brandon Mull, Jeannette Rallison, John Grisham. I don’t know that I have ONE favorite.

Do you have a quote that motivates you?
"Use your talents, for use is why they were made. What is a Sundial in the shade?"
-Benjamin Franklin

{Thoughts from Josi}
I believe that we were all sent here with a variety of gifts that, when realized and worked toward, we can develop into talents. One of the reasons we are sent to earth in the first place is to discover and grow these gifts. Developing my gift of being able to tell a good story into writing novels has been incredibly rewarding to me and I am passionate about encouraging other people to look inside themselves, find those gifts God has hidden there, and grow them. They not only bless the person that does the work, but it then influences everyone around them. It’s an amazing circle of inspiration and achievement. I have benefited greatly from people in my life who have developed their talents and hope that my efforts have the same benefit for someone else.

For more information about Josi - visit her website and/or blog -
Website - http://www.josiskilpack.com/
Blog - http://www.josikilpack.blogspot.com/

Josi, thanks for sharing your author beginning here ...
Best of luck with your books :) --- Wendy

Confessions of a Completely In*Sane Mother by Kersten Campbell

Author blogVIEW
with Kersten Campbell

Title: "Confessions of a Completely In*Sane Mother" by Kersten Campbell
Publisher: "Horizon Publishers" an imprint of Cedar Fort Publishing, Inc.
Release Date: February 2009 / In stores March of 2009
Website: http://www.kerstencampbell.com/

What inspired you to write the book?
I wanted to encourage mothers and families to laugh and enjoy the wonderful stages of family life instead of being stressed and overwhelmed by their daily disasters. Many mothers feel discouraged by their failures and weaknesses, but I love the human condition--that we all have our own faults and strengths, and ultimately we all need each other and the Savior to make it work. I wanted to write a book that would make women feel good about themselves, laugh about their family fiascos, and realize that all mothers struggle with the same issues, and that there is laughter and joy in the journey.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
My favorite chapter has to be the one where my son is selling rocks out of our driveway to all the neighbors. There is even a rock that costs $30! He is so hopeful, and to my horror and amazement some of the neighbors actually buy some. This really happened, and at first I was so mortified that my son was doing something so ridiculous, but then I ended up buying one myself because he was so cute and I couldn't resist him. I love this chapter because it shows how your kids do stuff that is crazy and embarrassing but you can't help but love them all the more for it!

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
This is my first one.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
No real event. I just have always loved being lost in a book, and I enjoy the musical quality of language and its power to move people. That is what inspires me to keep writing. I want to make a difference--to give people happiness and hope.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
Actually, most people thought I was crazy to try and write all the time because they viewed it as a 'pie in the sky' dream. I have a lot of practical people in my family. Luckily, the Lord believed in me. I believe He inspired me to write this book.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published? Never give up. Even if you aren't that good at writing, if you love it...keep at it. I look back at my early writing and just laugh. It's pretty bad. You will improve, and the only way to improve is to keep writing, and if one thing fails, try another until you find your niche. But keep your perspective. Don't sacrifice the things that are most important, like family. Be patient. Little by little, it will come.

Who is your favorite author?
Right now my favorite author is Shannon Hale. She writes in language that is so beautiful. It just washes over you with its stunning imagry.

Do you have a quote that motivates you? If so ... (please share)
"Live, Laugh, Love" It reminds me that family, laughter, and loving others are the most important things, and I want to keep writing about them.

********
Personal note: The blurb on the back cover of the book is a quote by me! I really enjoyed Kersten's book and laughed out loud many times ... Thanks Kersten for making a difference!

"Three Weeks with My Brother" by Nicholas Sparks

I have a confession - I found this book on a whim while at the public library (oh how I love the library) And am currently reading it. Mentioned this void to our daughter-in-law and said, "Gosh, I could write a better book than what is out there," and Julie said, "Well, Mom!" followed by a quick, "How would you like a co-author." Boston is so romantic. The restaurants, the history, the snow-covered parks. I also wanted to send a message out to girls. I wrote TSC when I was single and all my friends were getting married. When I had no clue what to do with my life after I graduated, I wanted to convey the message to women that a career doesn't define you. Neither does a man. That happiness is not in your job or your relationship status. Emma, in TSC, is confident in who she is. She sticks to her morals and no matter what never loses sight of who she is....bit bum and all!

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
This book is my baby so I can't say. Some are laugh out loud, hysterical, like Emma's first ensounter with Jack. Some are frustrating, as you watch Emma have out loud epiphanies that make you want to shake her. Some are serious, as Emma struggles to do the right thing. Some are very real and relatable. I can't pick one, as they all mean different things to me.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
Not yet, but I am working on one. I kinda put it on hold when TSC was released.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author?
Well, I've always been a dreamer. And loved writing stories as a kid, but moving to Boston, working at a coffee shop, dating city,Yankee boys....it all led up to TSC. Spending the summer in smalltown TX gave me the opportunity to put my ideas on paper.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person?
My Dad. He has always been my dream booster. He never said don't do this. Or you can't do this bc it's too expensive. He funded my dreams and encouraged me all the way, in whatever I set out to do.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
Don't give up! Write. Write for yourself, then try to get published. I went to a workshop that helped me pitch my manuscript. You can get an agent or self-publish or find someone who will take a change on a rookie (like I did). Whatever works for you. But most importantly, I encourage you to write. It's therapy. It's the best part!

Who is your favorite author?
Sophie Kinsella and Francine Rivers

Do you have an author website?
http://www.kimberly-huff.com/

What is your favorite quote?
"I'm looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can't-live-without-each-other love." ~ Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

*************
Upcoming Author Event:
Date: Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Time: 6:00 pm
Event: Book Signing at Davis-Kidd Bookstore
Address: 387 Perkins
Memphis, TN

Books are available through Amazon, Mapletree Publishing Company and your local bookstore!

"The Nest That Could Fly" by William Sawyers

Author BlogVIEW

with William Sawyers

Book Title - The Nest that Could Fly
Author - William Sawyers
Published by - LULU.com

Children's Story
Released July 2005
Listed on Amazon.com

What inspired you to write this book?
I was inspired to write the book from writing stories based on actual events from catching birds in the classrooms at my Elementary School. Two of my neighbors told me they loved my daughter's pants, which had material sewn around the bottom of each pant leg, and they asked me where I had purchased them. The pants were actually hand-me-downs from my sister's daughter. My sister had sewn on the material because she has a very petite daughter whose pants tend to become floods on her before she has grown out of them at the waist. By sewing on material, my sister's daughter is able to wear her pants for a longer period of time. As I explained this to my neighbors, they became very excited because they both have petite daughters and they thought this idea would work well for them.
That night at dinner I related this conversation to my husband. I told him that I thought women needed to share more of their good ideas with one another. This comment was the catalyst for many more ideas that occurred to me that night. Each idea built upon the last until I eventually decided that I would get women from all over the world to submit their favorite scripture or thought and its importance to them in their lives. One Heart, Many Voices is a compilation of all of those submissions.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?
One Heart, Many Voices is a small day-by-day book which sits on a desk or bedside table; therefore, it does not have chapters. Rather, each day brings a new page with an inspirational thought from a different woman from around the world. I have so many favorite pages in the book. There are submissions from women who are students, single, married, divorced, mothers, grandmothers, widows, etc. I have learned so much from these diverse and amazing women.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
No, but after this book was published, ideas kept coming. So I am currently working on other manuscripts.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author? Not really. I do remember my teacher asking me in fourth grade what I wanted to be when I grew up and I replied, "An author". With this particular book, I think just following through to the very end is what made it happen.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person? Yes. My husband, Travis, never once doubted that I would be able to get enough submissions to publish the book. He encouraged me from that very first conversation over dinner. In the very beginning stages I also shared my idea with my friend Kristy who was working on something she wanted to get published. She sent me her query letter, which was a big help because it made me realize that I just needed to be brave, write the letter, send it out, and hope for the best. Sometimes all it takes is one person to believe in what you're doing and give you the encouragement you need to keep on going.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
Just do it! Meaning, take time each day to write your book. And then send out your query letters and don't get discouraged at rejection. I sent out four query letters. I received three no's and one yes. But I read that the author of Flags of our Fathers received over thirty no's before he received a yes. And his book went onto become a major motion picture.

Who is your favorite author? Two of my favorite authors are Herman Wouk and James Michener. Historical fiction is my favorite genre.

What is your favorite quote? There are so many great quotes in the book. But one that comes to mind is a quote that was featured just two days ago. It reads "There is no way to be a perfect mother, but there are a thousand ways to be a good one." As the mom of four, this is a great reminder that the little things we do in our children's lives each day are the things that make the biggest difference.

********
Side notes: My sister, Amy, sent me this inspirational calendar for Christmas and I love it! Thank you Emily for all your hard work in putting this calendar together. It is really a beautiful collection of wisdom and love. (If you have the calendar ... check out the write up for July 20th, 2008) :)

The Well-Adjusted Child by Rachel Gathercole

Author Blogview with Rachel Gathercole

Book Title: The Well-Adjusted Child
Published by: Mapletree Publishing Company
Release Date: June, 2007

What inspired you to write the book? I have spent years witnessing my own homeschooled children and their homeschooled friends enjoy really rewarding and beneficial social lives as a result of homeschooling, above and beyond what they could have gotten at school. And at the same time, I have spent those same years hearing almost everyone we have met say, "But what about socialization?" or "I have thought about homeschooling, but I've decided not to because I want my kids to be socialized." I had read studies and other research that supported the idea that socialization was a benefit of homeschooling, I looked around for a complete information source I could refer these people to. When I found that one did not exist, I felt compelled to create one. And I have been very glad that I did.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why? I can't say I have a favorite chapter. I think the book is a total journey taking the reader from the usual, default assumptions and ways of thinking about homeschooling and socialization (and even childhood) to a new, more accurate picture and perspective on what homeschooling really entails and how it affects kids and families. At least that is my hope! So I couldn't really isolate one chapter as the best or most important.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they? Yes, books in the desk drawer. . . but no others published yet!

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author? I had a professor in college who said something to me that made a big difference (though he has no idea, as I'm sure he was just talking in his usual way). I went to his office before writing a paper and told him I had an idea for my paper topic but I wasn't sure if it was important enough, or a significant enough issue to write a whole paper about. He said, "That's the first dumb thing I've heard you say. If you can articulate something that is obvious to you, you are always doing us all a favor. Period." I have thought about that conversation many, many times, and it always gives me the gumption to go ahead and write it down, and send it out--whatever it may be.

Was there a person in your life who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? If so, who was that person? Well, I think in a certain way, writers and artists always have to believe in themselves without relying on others to believe in them, because you have the vision in your mind long before you have any product to show for it. Once the book is written, it seems easy to find people to get behind it. But I would say that if anyone believed in me more than I believed in myself, it was my husband and kids. I think my kids thought of me as a bestselling author even when I had only one article published! And my husband has always been extremely supportive as well, helping arrange time for me to write and query publishers and so on long before I had a completed book to show for all that time!

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published? There is no substitute for doing your homework. Research the publishers you are considering, find out what they publish, what they are looking for, and so on. Learn how to write a good query or book proposal, and then write the best one you can. If you are writing articles, read the magazines you are submitting to. Publishers have very specific needs, and your chances of getting published will greatly increase if you take notice of them!

Who is your favorite author? I'm not big on favorites. I don't tend to have them, or even to view things that way. But right now, I really love a book by Drs. Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate, called Hold Onto Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. I would buy a copy for every parent I know if I could.

Do you have an author website? What is it? Yes. It's www.rachelgathercole.com. Please check it out!

What is your favorite quote? There again, I don't tend to have favorites. But I think often of the quote, "This, too, shall pass." It has so much bearing on life and on parenting in particular. It applies to the good and the bad. The challenging times do pass, but the good stuff will pass you by, too, if you don't stop and enjoy it. That holds a lot of meaning for me, and helps me keep things in their proper perspective!

Thanks so much for thinking of me and for the opportunity to answer these questions!
Best wishes,
Rachel

The Call to Brilliance by Resa Steindel Brown

Blogview with Resa Steindel Brown -

Book Title: The Call to Brilliance by Resa Steindel Brown
Published by: fredric press.
Release Date: January, 2007

What inspired you to write the book?
My children inspire me. They have shown me who we are at birth and how we can bring that miraculous divinely inspired being into adult life. They encouraged me to document our experiences so that others may benefit from our journey.

What is your favorite chapter in the book – and why?
“Stephen,Just Stephen” I enjoy reading about Stephen as an adult. It shows how the ‘chaos’ he was so good at creating as a child has facilitated him as an international entrepreneur with a big heart. It shows how what might appear to be our worst challenges can become our greatest strengths.

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they?
I am currently working on a manual that well help others put their own journey into process.

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author? I would have been a writer, but not a published author, had it not been for the faith, dedication, and vision of my youngest son, Matthew. Had he not taken the document, published it, promoted it and passionately believed in the message it brings into the world, it would never have become a book. It would still have been a document sitting in hundreds of files buried in my computer, and I would still be someone who writes, but not an author.

Was there a person in your life that believed in you even more than you believed in yourself? If so – who was that person? When editing this book (20 years of writing) seemed like an impossible job, my husband just wouldn’t let me give up. Every night I went to bed feeling overly tired and overwhelmed. Every morning, sitting on my nightstand, was a gift…a love note and a new round of edits.

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published?
Don’t quit.

Who is your favorite author?
I don’t have just one favorite. I read different books for different reasons. I really respect William Glasser, M.D., Joseph Chilton Pearce, Thomas Moore, Parker Palmer and a number of others who focus on the issues I think are vital to the way we see life and raise our young.

Do you have an author website? What is it?
Our website is http://www.thecalltobrilliance.com/

What is your favorite quote?
“Follow your bliss.” - Joseph Campbell.

***********
Thank you Resa for the blogview - :) Your book really touched my life and the way that I view my children and their personal inner brilliance. My favorite quote from the book - "Every story is a love story regardless of the content because it teaches us about us."

The Wisdom of Big Bird (and the Dark Genius of Oscar the Grouch) by Caroll Spinney

Lessons from a Life in Feathers

This inspirational book gives readers the behind the scenes of the beginning days of Sesame Street and Caroll’s journey to play the role of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. I loved reading about his passion for puppets and the steps he took that eventually landed him the job as the most popular and famous bird ever!

Favorite chapters: “Become who you always were” and “Give it a Month.” Both of these chapters helped me appreciate Caroll's commitment to his dreams and inspired me to never give up on mine!
